Eating the Alphabet, E-H

6/19/13, E’s – Edamame, Eggs, Eggplant. (The latter two were for breakfast, cooked up like a hash with yellow potatoes, onion, and garlic!)

6/30/13, F’s – Fettuccine, florentine, figs, focaccia.

7/1/13, G’s – Grapes. Guacamole. Garbanzo beans. Green pepper. Ginger. Garlic. Gorgonzola.

The majority of the G’s I knocked out eating this!

It was a cous cous salad that I picked up from our local organic grocery store which contained cous cous, garbanzo beans, green peppers, onions, garlic, tomatoes, ginger, carrot, celery, and various herbs and spices. I added chopped cucumber, fresh spinach, and Gorgonzola cheese that I had on hand, plus a drizzle of olive oil just to moisten everything up.

7/2/13, H’s – Hummus. Hoagie. Honey. Hamburger. The hummus was Kalamata Olive Hummus from Trader Joes and I have to admit this is one of my favorite things I’ve bought there now. MEGA delicious.

Eating the Alphabet

Recently I’ve started a thing – to force greater variety into my regular diet, ie – to make me be healthier. AND make me cook more regularly. So the thing I am doing – working my way through the alphabet of foods! I would like to do a letter a day, but sometimes life gets in the way of that. Needless to say I’m through the letter D. It is fun. Sometimes I eat things raw (which has different health benefits) and sometimes I find a recipe to use. I love making food fun as well as super super yummy. So here’s the list to date:

6/11/13, A’s – Apples, Apricots, Avocado.

6/12/13, B’s – Bananas, Broccoli, Black Beans, Bell Peppers, Beef. (the former two were consumed raw, the latter three were a part of a rice dish)

6/13/13, C’s – Carrots, Cucumber, Cherries, Cauliflower, Cashews, Chickpeas, Coconut Milk. (the latter four were part of a curry dish I made, link below)

6/18/13, D’s – Donuts, Dates, Dill Pickles, Dark Chocolate.

Cauliflower Chickpea Curry
I substituted a pile of spinach for the tofu because I didn’t have tofu on hand.

Prosciutto Wrapped Asparagus

Made recently from food obtained at our local farmer’s market!

Prosciutto wrapped asparagus. Wrapped up as neatly as possible, then roasted in the oven at 375 with olive oil, salt and pepper, until they look done! So delicious they were gone in under 5 mins.

Before roasting:

After! Oh look – some Parmesan cheese snuck on at the end…

Find Success Through Passion

I was googling, as usual, and ran across one of those ‘things I wish I’d known sooner’ lists and this was taken straight out of my brain I am sure of it…

“When I’m not distracting myself from how repetitive my job is, I always think about how I’m slowly trading away the sunny days of my youth for “job security.”  I show up, put my butt in a chair for eight hours a day, and collect a paycheck.  Congratulations, I’ve traded away some time for some money.

I don’t feel alive at my job.  I do shit that’s unimportant to me.  I’d rather spend my time doing anything else, but the things I want to do wouldn’t pay me the way my boring job does….

…If I could offer my younger self some real advice, I’d tell myself not to base my career choice on what someone else recommended.  I’d tell myself not to pick a major because it’s what’s popular.  I’d tell myself not to get into a career field for the money.

I’d tell myself that the right choice is much simpler:  Do what you are.  As long as you’re true to yourself, and follow your own interests, you can find success through passion.  Perhaps more importantly, you won’t wake up ten years later in a career field you hate wondering “What the hell happened?”

Recycled Clothing Art

This is unbelievably cool.

When you meet your past self he’s a total jerk.

Future Warn Past

Awww House.

“Because you’re not ordinary House.  You’re way out there on the fringe somewhere.  I’m your best friend and half the time I don’t understand you. You’re alone, you’ve been alone your whole life.  When you read that book you were hoping that somewhere under all that talk of god there would be a way of thinking, a mind that you could recognize.  You wanted what we all want.”

“The power to transform into any water based object?”

“To look across the gulf and know there’s someone else like you.”

Coldest Star Found—No Hotter Than Fresh Coffee

Awww… star fail.

Coldest Star Found—No Hotter Than Fresh Coffee.

Nom nom nom

So I want to make everything at Smitten Kitchen. That’s not even an exaggeration.

But so far I’ve only made three things. They were all amazingly good and have become staples for me:

Clementine Cake (on the second making I added chocolate chips because who doesn’t like the orange and chocolate combo?)

Mushroom Bourguignon

And last but not least, the greatest thing on earth:

Blue Cheese and Red Potato Tart
